As any well-rounded music fan knows (and George Harrison would learn to his everlasting regret), the line between borrowing and infringement is awfully nebulous. Some songs recorded by the Beatles echoed the work that triggered their creation; with others, the influence is less obvious. Like any artists, the Fabs were inspired by everything they absorbed in the world around them. Some ideas came from their contemporaries; others from composers pre-dating the rock era. Occasionally, the group might utilize a literary entity as a springboard for their own artistry. Herewith, some examples.
The Beatles took on many responsibilities during their run at the top--musicians, songwriters, film stars, political spokesmen, entrepreneurs. In the last such role, they presided over a roster full of artists on the Apple label. (One of them, Jackie Lomax, is pictured here with George Harrison.) Some of the Apple stable were discussed in Fab Four FAQ; here are a handful of other performers associated with the Fabs. Of the artists and acts discussed below, some were famous before coming to Apple, some afterward; very few reached the heights of showbiz glory during their association with the Beatles.
In this chapter and "Rectify All The Things That You Should," we took our approach to the public. At the Chicago Fest For Beatles Fans in August 2007, we asked for help with this chapter, with the audience at our discussion chipping in ideas for a list of the Beatles' worst songs.
